Ever wondered what world-famous designer Sid Lee, shipping containers and lobster have in common? No, neither have I. Strangely enough though, they come together to form the Old Port’s newest restaurant du jour. Cleverly titled The Müvbox, this disguised shipping container uses solar power to transform itself in under two minutes into an instant pop-up diner, complete with open-air seating and fully functioning kitchen. (Check out the website for a neat video documenting the unfolding process.) Founder and owner Daniel Noiseux, who bestowed the first wood stove pizza upon Montreal over 25 years ago (Thank You!), crafted the original idea with creative giant Sid Lee, in collaboration with Montreal-based Ædifica. The prototype is aiming to attract restaurant owners, festival purveyors and retailers alike in the hopes of launching more outlets.

Serving up a fresh & affordable menu, dishes feature local lobster from Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Favourites include: the lobster roll, the clam chowder, and BBC’s Plant Earth which plays in the background. The Box will be serving up daily deliciousness for the rest of the summer. Run, don’t walk.

Located at Quai des Éclusiers, (corner of McGill and de la Commune)
Open from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, weather permitting.

  1. Just for the record, Sid Lee is a “collective ad agency” based in Montreal, not a person. http://www.sidlee.com They used to be known as Diesel Marketing, but were forced to rearrange their name a few years ago (it’s an anagram) after a trademark dispute with Diesel, the Italian jeans company.

  2. I have to stop looking at Montreal stuff from Toronto: ‘weep’.

  3. I popped down to see this last Saturday on the way to fireworks but it had just shut down. Nicely lit though, even when closed.

Sid Lee created the M-9 condos, the Tourisme Montréal site, and the phenominally successful Adidas campaign. They have great Piknic Electronik, Belgo and Ubisoft videos on their site.

  4. Le concept est impeccable. La photo aussi.

  5. Pas possible Marc, le Silo no. 5 est dans le fond.

  6. We stopped by Muv Box for a quick dinner this weekend before the fireworks. It was quite impressive. My girlfriend has family in Cape Cod so she has had some very good lobster rolls, and she was quite happy with their version. The clam chowder and pizzas were equally good. And most importantly, the lady taking our order was very informed and enthusiastic about the concept, which is a good thing when curious passers-by have random questions about energy consumption and what-not.

It’s not the cheapest “fast-food” around, but for the quality, it can’t be beat.

Afterwards, we hung around and watched them close-up shop for the night.

    All around, a good experience!
