Jane’s Walks, which commemorate seminal urban sociologist, Jane Jacobs, invite people to explore and share the places they care about as well as things that may make them uncomfortable, places they feel are unsafe, and places with room for improvement.
Jane’s walks are not your typical tour, and participants are expected to do more than hang back while the experts talk. Led by citizens or community groups, the tours offer a more intimate, sometimes critical perspective of the urban landscape. The goal is to enrich the experience by opening a dialogue among all the participants.
This year, I noted that a few of the walks in Montreal invite citizens to evaluate alleyways, parks, and creative ways to reappropriate public space:
Mile End: Citizen Initiatives and alternative lifestyles (Bilingue)
Sunday, May 2nd at 14h, at St Viateur Bagels (St-Viateur near Parc).
How are regular citizens transforming and re-signifying their urban surroundings? Are these re-appropiations of space always accord to city bylaws and regulations? What is happening behind the alleys and inside the old-warehouses of this neighborhood? Come, walk, jump, chat…and discover with new eyes the Mile End!”

Dimanche 2 mai à 10h, Parc De Lorimier coin Chabot et Laurier dans le Plateau. Bienvenue aux poussettes et aux enfants.
Cette promenade dans le secteur De Lorimier du Plateau a pour objectif d’évaluer la «marchabilité» de notre quartier où habitent de nombreuses familles. Nous discuterons des enjeux liés à la circulation et de pistes d’amélioration de notre qualité de vie. Quelques capsules historiques permettront aussi de découvrir la riche histoire du secteur!

C’est le comité Familles de l’Association de résidants et de résidantes d’Hochelaga-Maisonneuve qui est derrière cet événement rassembleur. Ce sera l’occasion pour les parents et citoyens d’évaluer l’état général des parcs et installations qui font partie intégrante de notre milieu de vie.

Jane’s Walks originated in Toronto in 2007, and has quickly spread around the world: This weekend, over 400 tours will be offered in 68 cities.
