There used to be a payphone on every corner but with the advent of cellphones these ubiquitous boxes have nearly vanished.
New York City held a contest to see if the payphone could be redesigned. Perhaps it could become a wi-fi hotspot, a 911 service, a bike rack, or an electric car charger?
Currently New York has around 12,000 payphones – in the early ’90s there were more than 35,000.
Some of the concepts from the contest will be included by New York City in a request for proposals for the next generation of phones.
