Three years ago in this weblog, Chris Worden profiled the state of one of Ottawa’s long-neglected architectural gems, the Ogilvy’s Department Store Building. The Ottawa Citizen reports that the Ogilvy’s Building has suffered a partial, unplanned collapse today. Citizen columnist David Reevely provides an analysis of some of the factors leading to that collapse.

  1. Thankfully all heritage elements had been saved and it will come back as stated. The Citizen was very mis-informed when the article had first been published. I’ve been covering the building for the past 2 years and have formed a Facebook group to show it off. I’ve thoroughly documented its deconstruction and have tons of photos worth of it.

  2. Unfortunately, collapse is inevitable at a certain point with old buildings that weren’t given the maintenance throughout their lifetimes. I work in construction, so it’s something that I see often. A shame to lose a heritage building, but I was impressed with the plans they have shown for rebuilding a new one.
