With the much ‘discussed’ construction of the Lansdowne Park Redevelopment project creeping closer to its slated date of completion, I feel it important to document the colourful, comical, and critical murals that have graced the constructions boards on the site’s most residential street frontage.
The murals, which run the entire eastern length of Holmwood Avenue (a formerly undeveloped side of the street which will soon be lined with town and terrace homes), have brightened what would otherwise have been a banal construction zone. This street art intervention by the community is a bold example of how to turn urban lemons into lemonade and plywood into protests.

The city and private interests have managed to build (using our money and by stretching the law) a very ugly shopping mall. The architecture screams of box stores, and looks like an ugly stuffed fish, mirroring the greed and broken judgement of people making decisions for the city. They couldn’t even leave a decent view of Aberdeen. So it’s nice to see local artists at work. Hopefully time will put people with a brain and a heart in charge, and they will tear down this very misplaced box mall on this very misused piece of land and put something meaningful in its place.
Thanks for capturing this precious moment in time.
