Developing downtown Vaughan

Read more articles by

As we posted a few weeks ago, “downtown” Vaughan will rise thanks to the provincial government’s decision to fund the Spadina/York University subway extension. Do not be fooled — the extension is not just a move to ease the traffic problems of Toronto’s northern communities. Its to spur development (and increase the tax base). Politicians and developers are drooling over the possibilities of building a bustling city centre for Vaughan at Highway 7 and Jane. Read the Toronto Star article about this topic in today’s paper.

All of us concerned with smart and sustainable development in the GTA region should keep a close eye on “downtown” Vaughan’s growth. It has the possibility of becoming another downtown North York (read previous Spacing Wire post and comments if you need further explanation). As I previously wrote, if there is a perfect candidate for a design review panel, this development is it.

  1. Hey Matthew,
RE: place of last public execution in Canada. I believe that it was actually in 1869 – in Ottawa. On April 7, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, one of the fathers of the Confederation, was assassinated. James Patrick Whelan was found guilty on circumstantial evidence and was hanged at the Nicholas Street Jail (Carleton County Jail) on February 11, 1869. His was the last public execution in Canada.

  2. vaughan is not exactly the poster child of sustainable development. their general modus operendi seems to be a) give developers free rein to develop subdivisions whereever b) people move in because they can get a big house for cheap c) congestion becomes a big problem because subdivisions have been built willy nilly all over the place with out proper transportation planning d) they widen the roads making congestion worse in the short term and sending property taxes skyrocketing because they municipality is now paying for infrastructure that they should have made the developers pay for which would have increased the price of the housing which would have made people think a little harder before moving to the burbs. la la la. vaughan transportation planning is poo. keep your eye on them.
