There are a couple of articles in The Star today about the Waterfront . . . you can almost taste the excitement building up to the announcement of the winning Waterfront Design Proposal.
Above all, Christopher Hume seems most impressed with how engaged citizens have been with the competition, citing that the online opinion poll has been one of The Star’s most popular – ever:
Against all odds, however, the $20 million international waterfront design competition has become a public event. True, $20 million isn’t going to buy us a new waterfront, but if nothing else, the five finalists have given us reason to dream.
As it has been for a while now, the West 8 design proposal is leading in the polls, with P.O.R.T. a close second. The winning entry is to be announced next Friday, so either go and vote on The Star’s site or skip the middleman and let the Toronto Waterfront Revitilization Corporation know what you think here. If you haven’t had a chance to view the displays in public, you can download the display panels here – just click on the name of the design team and download the pdf at the bottom of the page. I highly recommend checking out these files online before voting or giving feedback as the single pictures on The Star’s web page don’t do any of the designs much justice.
There’s also a short article about the beginning of the construction at Union Station, which is considerably less positive than the first. The article criticizes the countless aborted starts and the beauracratic wrangling that have, to date, provided few results. It looks like only time will tell how long it will take before actual work begins.

Why the hell is Atom Egoyan on the jury? That’s like letting Jack Diamond pick the winner of the Palme D’Or.
Why so angry all the time?
Egoyan is an successful artist and thinker, has a proven committement to Toronto, and good design (his cinema/bar down on Queen W was beautiful), and I’m very happy a guy like him is on the Jury for something as important as this project.
