MTA vs. TTC

Torontonian Ivor Tossell was recently in New York City and took this picture of an MTA window display on 5th Avenue. Like, the main big money part of 5th, near Bergdorf’s and Saks. A window ad for MTA cards. One wonders if Margaret Wente would still say public transit is for the poor if such a campaign surfaced for the TTC in Toronto in the Holt’s window, but we know we’ll never have to worry about seeing anything remotely as creative from the TTC here.

  1. MTA is great… even if they did have a strike. It’s 24/7. We’ll never have that in T.O. They don’t even have that in Europe. And their touch-screen ticket & monthly/weekly/daily pass purchasing kiosk is amazing. You can re-use old passes because they are ‘refillable’ – which saves on waste, and you can pay with debit or credit. In addition you can get incentives of 1 or 3 free rides depending on how many you purchase. What a smart way to run a transit system. Even the NYC Sanrio store in Times Square has Hello Kitty MTA buttons for sale… oh and btw, it’s Saks.

  2. Margaret Wente would say that TTC bureaucrats were foolishly wasting money on ego-driven propaganda.

That’s because government services need to be more business-like! But only in the sense of out-sourcing and cutting costs. Never do things like brand development or paying fat salaries to managers.
