Spacing Wire reader Derek Wuenschirs sent us an email today that was a good laugh — the City has released the new recycling calendar for 2006 and 2007. If you look closely, the cover image on the calendar captures the skyline of Toronto. But something is little……. off. If you look closely, the SkyDome does not exist yet, nor the wall of development we find along Queen’s Quay. As Wuenschirs says, “It’s as if they’re trying to remind us how clean our city was in the days before waterfront condos, Scotia tower, or even recycling….”
It may be a small detail, but in the age of digital photography, it’s not too hard to find a decent image of Toronto’s skyline from the last 20 years.

The Scotia Tower and BCE place is missing too… so I’m guessing this is from the mid-80s?
mind you, it does look nice!
this picture is a capture of the city the day i was born. In 1985.
In ’85 they had those giant inflatable greenbin’s and recycle boxes floating in the harbour, as seen in this picture, as a publicity pilot project that only finally got real-life momentum in the early 90s and early 2000s, respectively.
@Shawn: You crack me up.
Maybe the picture is meant to represent the Reuse/Recyle part of the initiative?
In the spirit of recycling, the City is attempting to save costs and resources by continuing to use already procured graphical elements of the City, instead of wasting cash and film to send out a photographer with a fresh new Polaroid!
