We want you to identify this intersection. Leave your guess in the comments section: we’ll hold on to your picks until 6pm (and change from our regular 3pm unveiling due to scheduling conflicts) when we’ll unveil the answer. If you want to see a larger version of the photo check it out on Spacing Photos.

UPDATE at 6pm: I thought this would stump our readers, but apparently not — it’s looking north on Keele at Dundas in the Junction.

  1. Maybe Front and Parliament looking east towards the G&W distillery?
The chimney stack in the background looks sort of right, but I’m not sure there were ever streetcars on Front and I don’t recognize any of the other buildings. *fingers crossed*

  2. Dundas St. W. at Bloor St. W. looking north on Dundas. The bank therefore is at the north-east corner.

  3. It looks like Keele and Dundas, looking north towards the CP underpass.

My guess is that the date is somewhere between 1910-1920, and pre-dates the TTC. The TRC Dundas car wyed here, with connections to various Toronto Suburban Railway cars to exotic locales such as Weston and Woodbridge, Cooksville, Georgetown or Guelph, or Gilmour Avenue or even Davenport Road.

  4. Keele & Dundas, looking north on Keele. You can just see the railway underpass in the background.

  5. Judging from the angle of the bank and what might be a bridge in the back, I’m guessing Keele looking north at Dundas?

  6. Somewhere around Roncesvalles & Dundas West? Looks like a nice corner. Nice colours and contrast in the photograph, too.

  7. Nasty! not quite Y/B, not Bl and Lansdowne as south has too much old building, let’s try looking north on Keele at Dundas St. W. but still unsure.

  8. I’m going to guess Queen and Carlaw.

  9. Dundas and Keele, looking north. The bank building on the north-east corner (right side of photo) is still there, but has been taken over by a Money Mart branch. The building on the north-west corner (left side of photo) is now a “Super Submarine”. After the first three buildings north of the bank, the rest of the buildings on that side of the street are gone (including the smokestack), and now occupied by a recently-vacated (I think) Canadian tire store.

BTW, kudos on this fascinating series of pics.

  10. Keele and Dundas looking north??

Is that a Toronto Suburban car sitting in the background?

  11. NW and NE corners of Queen and Spadina?

  12. King & Dufferin?

That looks like a railroad overpass in the distance.

  13. Not sure – maybe Parliament and Carlton looking south?

  14. My initial guess was Queen and Church, looking south, based on the Scotiabank. But upon reflection, there are some minor design differences in that building (my desktop background used to be a photo I found on the net of an eastbound PCC at that intersection).

  15. Church and Queen, looking south on Church?

  16. Looks to me like Keele Street facing North from Dundas Street in the Junction. The back on the northeast corner is now a Money Mart.

  17. Huh, I think I actually know this one: Keele & Dundas, looking north on Keele. The bank on the right is now, sadly, a Money Mart. The building barely visible on the left is that decrepit wedge-shaped brick edifice that now houses Super Submarine and it’s ugly orange signage.

  18. Doh! I should have gotten that! I thought that bank looked familiar, but I drew a total blank.

I believe the large chimneystack in the back belonged to the (now gone) Heintzman piano factory. I could be mistaken though.

  19. hey, that’s my hood. a good spot if you like pidgeon aerobatics. there’s a colony on this corner that does circles over the intersection every so often. cars generally rule here though. too bad.
