This Earth Day, Seventh Generation (a company that produces non-toxic and environmentally safe household products) has partnered with the Seed Collective to create an electronic forest for New Orleans that will support that city’s urban forest. “One Ton Tree†involves a virtual opportunity for people to use their cell phone and get involved in an urban reforestation initiative in Post-Katrina New Orleans.
We invite you to grow a virtual tree, which help plant real trees where they are needed most. Through the Seed Collective’s wireless interactive tool (called SEED), you can dial a number on your cell phone, plant a virtual seed, and help it grow into a tree on your computer screen using the numbers on your keypad. That’s pretty cool—but what’s even better is that this simple act helps fund the planting of real trees in New Orleans, following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

The Seed project is a Toronto-based interactive funding model started with the assistance of the CFC Media Lab (birthplace of [murmur]) and “is the first cell-phone driven interactive experience whose purpose is to effect environmental change in the real world from a virtual position.” The urban forest is Seed’s focus, and you can read more about the project here.

WOW! Seedcollective is the greenest of the green! This is phenomenal! I went to http://www.seedcollective.org
using my cell phone,I dialed the long distance # to New Orleans, only costs a few cents, the screen appears,a forest with a live sky. I followed the instructions I press 1,1,1, to grow my seed which appears on the screen, I get to choose from 7 different very surreal trees, grow my tree bigger, change its color, I like the blue one, after a few minutes of fascinating interaction, I can’t believe I’m interacting with the computer with my cell. Someone else appears onscreen, I guess someone else is also growing a virtual seed into a tree in real time!
When I hang up my tree is planted. I put my email address in so I could download an image of the tree I personally created. I get an email with my image and a thank you. I like this ecollaboration stuff. This eco company in the U.S. Seventh Generation is sponsoring all the virtual trees planted by donating $1 per tree,up to $40,000 to plant real live trees in New Orleans on Earth Day, this Sunday April 22nd. How green is that?
