DEADLINE ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 4th: Spacing is looking to fill two internship positions: one for photography and another for marketing and merchandise. The time commitment is negotiable (one or two days a week, full time for 6 weeks, etc.) and a perfect opportunity for students looking for real world experience and to work in a professional organization. The positions are unpaid and the length of each internship will vary.
PHOTOGRAPHY: The photo internship is perfect for students looking to boost their own portfolio as well as develop and manage our (inactive) Spacing Photos blog. You will be assigned by our art director to take photos for our upcoming issues, search for photos for specific articles, manage and curate our daily photoblog, create photo-based games, and manage Flickr photo groups and pools on topics of interest to the magazine.
MARKETING: Spacing has been successful with our lone merchandise item, the Toronto subway button series. Sadly, our staff has become over-stretched with editorial, web site and business management work that we need to bring someone on help keep this part of our operation running as smoothly as possible. You will be in charge of dealing with retailers and our button manufacturer, as well as overseeing the distribution of buttons ordered through our online store. A successful candidate could turn this internship into a paying gig if they demonstrate the ability to: expand the amount of retailers carrying buttons and other Spacing merchandise, help develop new products, and generate enough revenue to sustain this position.
Both positions call for candidates that are self-motivated and need little supervision. We want applications from people who are interested in our magazine’s subject matter and believe in the mandate of Spacing.
Candidates need to submit a resumé, a letter of reference (if possible), and a one-page cover letter detailing why they would be the best person for the position. Potential candidates will be contacted for a one-on-one interview. You do not have to have an institutional internship program to take part, but its always a good motivation if you are being graded. Successful candidates will report to Spacing’s creative director.
DEADLINE: Friday, January 4th, 2008. Interviews will begin the week of January 7th. Early submissions are welcome.
