Tyler Brule has clearly no knowledge of Toronto and how inter-governmental relationships work. There are many reasons why Toronto doesn’t reach its potential, and it is not due to a lack of desire or vision by its people. Here are just a few samples of why Toronto isn’t what it could be: a thing called the OMB, bad political leadership, our taxes not staying in our communities and probably most of all because of people like Tyler Brule who hate our city. It is due to people like him that the provincial and federal governments feel like the have “carte blanche” to neglect us and exploit this city.
Don’t worry so much about Tyler Brule. I used to buy Wallpaper mag, like everybody else, in the late 1990s. It looked good, and showed good design and good buildings, but the jet-set travel thing was untrustworthy. I always took their city profiles with chunks of salt, because they were showing a sort of magical, or illusionary, view of that city. I’d like to show Tyler around Toronto, or any city. Bet he only sees a tiny fraction of the towns he visits. Holt Renfrew/Drake-esque places are fine and good, but they don’t represent the whole city.
Thanks Shawn, it just saddens me when people say nasty things about the city I was born and live in. I don’t claim to hate Vancouver, Montreal or any other place, so why is it ok for them to do so about Toronto? You are right, I shouldn’t worry so much about it, (specially coming from an unimportant publisher), but it still hurts a little bit… If Tyler Brule saw my neighbourhood, the great people who live there, and relize it is but a small tiny fraction of the real Toronto then maybe he would change is mind, but it is a universe away from his “Holt Renfrew/Drakesque places” (which are fine places) and so he will just keep spewing garbage.
How is the province exploiting Toronto? Compared to other cities in the Province, it is more apt to say that Toronto is exploiting the Province.
Province exploits TO simply by taking way too much out of thew city and invest it elsewhere within the province. we get 10 billion less than what comes in thru the upper level tax systems. Such nonsense they continue to work us over.
rhonda,
That ’10 billion’ goes to pay for things like health care and education. The figure is derived from using income tax. Since everyone in the province, regardless of municipality, pay income tax, every city can make such dubious claims.
The truth of the matter is that Toronto gets more provincial funding from grants than any other city. It averages more than $2400 per household.

While it is a bit odd to see Tyler Brulé, proponent of jetsetting global travel, talk of sustainability and chastise T.O. for slipping behind in areas of mass transit it’s not like he’s saying anything different than has been written on this blog many a time. So why the hate?
When did a “take with chunk of salt” caveat become “hate”? No hate, just caveat.
