Ice rinks across the city may be kept open for an extra two weeks, extending in to mid March, with City Hall’s approval.
City Council is set to review a report written by the City of Toronto’s Community Development and Recreation Committee which proposes that 14 rinks around the city remain open, weather permitting, until March 15, 2009.
“Our outdoor artificial rinks are well-loved by Torontonians of all ages,” said Councillor Joe Mihevc, Chair, Community Development and Recreation Committee. “From leisure and instructional programs to shinny hockey, the rinks provide a valuable winter recreation opportunity.”

It wasn’t so long ago that the rinks were open on the first of November. I remember when the Aura Lee rink at Spadina/Bloor was being prepped in the days before Hallowe’en.
That means there were 4 full months of ice skating and hockey.
