Especially interesting were the knee-jerk and belligerent comments below the Star article on Sewell’s book.
I have a sense that 10 years ago those people wouldn’t have felt threatened enough to respond. That their ethos is now clearly on the defensive is a real sign of progress, I would say.
John Sewell does not even understand the relationship between assessment values and mill rates. Expecting insightful analysis from him might be a bit much. 1 billion in expenses for a GTA population of more than 5 million is less than $189 per person. The average household is ~2.4 persons so the $1000 figure is closer to $454. Selective weighting demonstrates bias. He should also compare transit subsidies.
For a better look at the issues of sprawl I would recommend reading the works of Yves Zenou.

Although I enjoyed Sewell’s book ‘The Shape of the City’ I agree with Glen regarding his use of misleading statistics. In a recent Metronews article he complained about GO being highly subsidized compared to the TTC, despite GO’s Asian-like level of fare recovery.
