“Fire causes subway delays” – at least it wasn’t like the one on this day in 1976 at Christie Station that destroyed four subway cars and shut the Bloor-Danforth line for two days. Shuttle buses galore ran between St. George and Ossington I believe. Apparently the fire was deliberately set in one of the cars and spread quickly.
These fires are one more reason we need platform doors on the subway (to go with noise reduction from earsplitting brakes, better climate control of the platform area, deterrence of attempted suicides and prevention of accidental falls…) – many of these fires are caused by discarded trash which is blown onto the live “third rail”.
I wonder how much of the parks backlog could have been fixed if they had been part of the original Stimulus Fund application to the Feds?
Which explains the funky stairs-to-escalator situation if I’m not mistaken.
If I were Canadian I would vote for Giambrone, definitely.

I should have commented on Monday. I wanted to add a link to extend the discussion regarding laneway development. In the column there was mention of vancouver’s move to allow some minor development. this link will provide more info on the those planning changes. It also sorta props a local architect trying to fill the laneway building niche.

I really don’t understand why the park walking issue is being framed as a senior issue. What matters is the nature of the use of the park — is it commercial and organized (ie, are they being directed or lead to the park by the instructor of a paid-for class) or informal and non-commercial (ie, a few people in an exercise class that’s not in the park choose to go for a walk before the class). If it’s the former then it should be charged for at the same rate as fitness bootcamps and other commercial park uses, if it’s the latter then it’s perfectly normal use of a park and should be free. Whether the participants are 6, 16 or 65 is totally irrelevant.
