I’m glad to see that money in the capital budget will go to bike lanes – very happy! I wonder, though, if someone can tell me why it takes $22.6 million. Perhaps I’m revealing my naiveté, but I’m having a hard time figuring out why it takes this much money. Maybe we’re finally getting a protected bike lane? or does this include bike ‘paths’ that require clearing and leveling land, then putting down some surface? Anyone?
From the budget analyst notes at
http://www.toronto.ca/budget2010/pdf/cap2010_analystnotes_transportation.pdf
“Projects to be completed in 2010 include bike trails along the CN Leaside, Finch and Gatineau Hydro corridors ($17.459 million).”
“Green” or “eco friendly” vehicles are a bit of a farce. Perhaps “slightly less polluting than the rest” would be a better name.
Thanks, Steve, for the link and clarification.
@Vic – I’m a bit skeptical of ‘eco friendly vehicles’ too … like ‘doing the wrong thing worse.’
