I am afraid that the transit data is being misused. Using it as justification for Transit City, is akin to treating diabetes with laser eye surgery. The increase in commute times in Toronto are mainly a result of nearly 100% of job creation occurring outside the city proper over the last twenty years. Less outsiders coming in and more insiders going out.
The change in commute patterns, to areas outside the city with little to no PT, makes the lopsided ‘investment’ in TC unwise. A portion of that money would be better off going towards bike lanes in Toronto.
Glen,
really, how much money needs to go toward bike lanes (ie, paint a white strip on the pavement)? Money for 1km of TC will probably cover all the bike lanes we want to paint in the city. If the city says tomorrow that B-D bike lane is approved but the city does not have the money to paint it, the cyclists all around the city will happily get some white paint and start doing it themselves, does not cost the city a cent 🙂 Bike lanes do not need much money, it is the political will that is missing.
