This may be a cliche, but I’ve always loved Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue because it sounds like a city. Well, it sounds like New York, or some 1920s metropolitan metropolis New York. Looking for a YouTube version of it last night, I found this animation I hadn’t seen before. It’s unapologetically big city and unapologetically New York. I encourage you to watch the entire thing. You’ll need one less coffee today if you do. It’s stuff like this that makes you (me) realize other people love cities and all their ridiculous layers as you (I) do. Enjoy it while you can; I’m sure Disney will get Google to take it down. It’s part of “Fantasia 2000”.
Sorry, I have no idea why the link isn’t working. Last try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o6QKpNK9Cc
this is wonderful! thanks so much for posting!
This is a segment from Fantasia 2000, originally released to IMAX theatres in late 1999.
I’ll forever associate Rhapsody in Blue with travelling to cities all over the world – it’s the United Airlines theme song!
I always associate this with the opening scene from Woody Allen’s Manhattan, which is one of the greatest artistic celebrations of a city and its urban bustle.

We need more artwork like that about Toronto. It should be works that a lot of Canadians will actually see and enjoy and perhaps people abroad as well, works that become a part of our culture.
