RE LAWRENCE HEIGHTS REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL:
Contrary to the gratuitous accusations of racism by leftist trash-talker Councillor Augimeri,, most surrounding residents agree in principle with the redevelopment of Lawrence Heights . But the City’s proposal to increase the number of units from 1208 currently to 7500, (over a six fold increase), will harm all residents, especially those in Lawrence Heights . The purpose of building this dense new mini-City in the space of a few city blocks is not to benefit any residents, but to raise funds to pay for the social housing replacement by privatizing public land. Unfortunately all local residents will pay a heavy price, with traffic congestion and lowered quality of life.
If the City wants to act responsibly, rather than manufacturing fake conflicts between neighbourhoods as a smokescreen for financial expediency, it should delay approval of the Lawrence Heights redevelopment plan until it can be integrated with planning for the Allen expressway, to allow traffic and accessibility needs to be met in a way that enhances all the neighbourhoods. The City also needs to consult neighbours south of Lawrence Heights who were inexcusably left out of the consultation process, and who will bear the brunt of the density explosion.
