One comment

  1. Vital signs has lost its utility. In prior editions it had break outs between the city and region. Referring to global ranking reports that look at the GTA as a whole, when the performance of the city and region differ greatly is a misleading. Take for example the unemployment figures used. In Toronto it is 10.8% while the rest of the CMA is 9.2%. There are further disparities in the well being of immigrants between regions. While the Vital Signs reports comment of the hardship that immigrants face, it does no analysis as to the different outcomes in the different regions. Food Deserts, they mention that 51% of Torontonians live more than 1km away from grocery store. They don’t mention that there has been a loss of a number of grocery stores as pressure to redevelop small plazas to condos has reduced their numbers. Perhaps most galling was the intentional use of the old cordon count travel statistics. Referencing 2000 Toronto report while omitting a much more detailed count ( http://www.jpint.utoronto.ca/PDF/MMM_Cordon_TechRep.pdf ).
