Again ran into a car parked squarely in the Sherbourne “separated” bike lane today. Heck what is the point of a “separated” bike lane when cars can still block it at will? Just to make it harder for cyclists to get around it?
I stopped and had a chat with the two ladies in it. They were apologetic but did not move the car initially. Then I flagged down a cop on bike at the next intersection and asked him to ticket them. He went up to check it out. I don’t think he actually ticketed them, but hopefully a warning from the cop would teach them not to do it again.
I blame the city too. The design the city picked for the bike lane in moronic. Had they chosen to put a bi-directional lane on one side of the street, there would be enough space to keep one parking lane, also the bike lane will be wide enough to allow passing comfortably, that way the physical separation can be designed to stop cars from entering bike lane altogether. Or at least introduce one or two parking bay mid-block to allow 15 minutes stopping so that drivers have a much better alternative to blocking bike lane.
Can someone explain to me why cash fares will still be frozen at $3, while a 10 pack of tokens sees yet another increase? If I’m not mistaken, individual tokens will have gone up 15 cents while the cash fare has remained frozen. Hopefully this will mean that the next couple of fare hikes will be exclusively on cash fares.
Rant: I’m not even going to mention the cost of a metropass, as you have to be 1) 100% transit dependent (this includes being unable to cycle or walk) 2) have a ton of places to go and 3) live downtown to make it a financially viable option. If you want its convenience, it is better to just buy a month’s worth of tokens plus an extra 5-10 for stopovers or unexpected trips at a time.
After accounting for the transit pass tax credit, the break-even point between a Metropass and tokens kicks in at around 37 to 41 rides (depending on whether you subscribe to the MDP). That’s essentially one round trip per weekday, hardly out of the question for regular riders.
