  1. I’m amazed that so many “Leslieville” residents are against the new TTC yard planned for Ashbridges. Its sad that so many trees need to come down but it is an industrial site and I imagine there will be a replanting of some trees once construction is done … Id like to see the large willows kept along lakeshore. Other than that whats the problem? Concerns over traffic on Leslie and Lakeshore? I don’t see huge traffic jams at the Russell yard in the morning and evening when the cars are starting or ending their rush hour shift. I imagine less traffic into that yard will be a relief for other “leslieville” residents…less noise for sure. I even heard one Beach activist in a rag called the “toilet paper” bitch about the traffic congestion and that it was going to add at least 5 more minutes to their commute downtown. What environmental activist in the beach commutes to downtown by car? I admit that utilizing the Hillcrest yard for some additional storage makes sense, if its there than use it. Otherwise, I say go ahead TTC. We need to pick our battles, be grateful we are moving forward and updating our system.

  2. Ryan, I agree. Leslieville crowd should be careful what they wish for. Ford does not need any more excuses to go hack and slash streetcars.

  3. I think the Lever Brothers yard (now that the lessee is gone – see stevemunro.ca for details of this) is the superior option which reuses an industrial context rather than ripping up greenspace. Instead we’re going to spend $51m on soil remediation alone at Ashbridges.

  4. Re: Finch West

Before we panic about the corridor, it should be noted that the Finch West subway station may do wonders to address the overcrowding and reliability of the route.

  5. agreed. plus:

you know what’s underneath the grass and trees at the southeast corner of leslie and lakeshore? it’s not pristine soil. it’s sludge from the adjacent sewage treatment plant.

also, it’s an awfully long trek from the hillcrest yard to the beaches. if you want reliable transit in leslieville then don’t you want to have the streetcar yard in your neighbourhood? and my understanding is that hillcrest is used to fix streetcars rather than store them.
