The release of our eco-friendly issue will take place at an emerging green business: The Berkeley Church. It’s been used as an event venue for years but has begun to undergo a transition over the last few months. The owners of the venue bought the property of the lumber yard to the west and have converted the former storage area into a large event space with a 25-foot ceiling and a patio with a running stream to signify where Taddle Creek should be flowing. The building is currently being fit with infrastructure for a green roof. We’re crossing our fingers that the Tree House — which can hold 25 people for a sit-down dinner — will be ready in time for our readers to experience. The owners also have some very ambitious development plans centered around LEED platinum certification that we’ll be interested to watch blossom over the next little while. Take a look at some photos of the church.
We’ll have some activities for you, good music by a local Track Meet DJs Dave Morris and Ed Keenan (Ed also wrote the cover story with Suzuki and Miller), and hopefully a handful of eco-friendly prizes from a 50/50 draw. Spacing’s release parties are a way for us to meet our readers, discuss current issues affecting our city, and generate a little bit of cash to help keep advertising in the magazine to a minimum.
We will also be screening the My Toronto Video Contest winners at the launch.
For those interested, this event is the release of our 10th issue (!!!) and the exact date of Spacing’s 4-year anniversary — we launched our first issue at the 360 Legion Hall (now closed) on Queen Street West on Dec. 3, 2003.
We hope to see you in two weeks!
