The other day, Spacing challenged our readers to propose a better name for the former Greater Toronto Transportation Authority (GTTA) now known as Metrolinx. In the initial post by Sean Marshall about the rebranding, our commenters shared a common distaste for the generic name, thus the inspiration to hold a little contest asking for new name suggestions. We had over 80 comments with numerous suggestions — Spacing editors narrowed the filed down to a combination of popular suggestions and our personal favourites. We’ve included a silly name, plus some that may not be

Unlike our previous polls, you can vote for multiple choices. So, which new name would you like to see the GTTA adopt?

  1. If only our public officials would think of acronyms when naming their offspring, we might have had the Toronto Area Transit Authority (TATA)issuing a TATAPASS for travel.

  2. LOL! Can I change my vote? I want to vote for the TATA!

  3. What about Super Mega Transit Network?

  4. My choice was “pronto” which vaguely rhymes with Toronto and has similarity to “presto”, the fare card system.

  5. Starting to really like GoTO (if pronounced Go-Tee-Oh) Short, catchy, and triple entendre with “going-to places”, “GO trains”, and “T.O.”. Plus, there is precedent with IndyGo, the name for the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation.

  6. Where is “Toronto Area Transportation Authority”?

  7. Does GoTO rhyme with RoboTO? If not, then surely RoboTO is the superior name?

(Presto! Pronto! That was my vote.)

  8. I like GoTO. It is so Basic and easy to interpret.

    sorry for the programming humour

  9. Go-Tee-Oh (rhymes with Cheerio or Oatie-O) has a nice ring to it…I like how it just rolls off the tongue…

Could Pronto not be a future name expansion? Perhaps an express service? “Catch the ‘Go-Tee-Oh Pronto’ to Union…and use your Presto”

  10. As long as it’s not Portage, it’ll be OK. I can only imagine how annoyed people will get when Americans/foreigners keep pronouncing it “Port-age.” And they will be befuddled with “to” vs “TO.”

I like the ones that play on Toronto’s name: ConnecTor, ConnecTO, GoTO, Pronto (got my vote), and the TRIP. And TATA, if that’s valid.

But then again, is there anything really pronto about the transportation here? If you want to talk about mega advertising, that’d be a huge waste of space.

I hope that the GTTA gets wind of this contest.

  11. Have 32 people really chosen Metrolinx or are the people over at Metrolinx trying to skew the results?

  12. TRIP is a 12 year-old, city-funded harm reduction organization whose original full name is the Toronto Raver Info Project

  13. Ever lug a canoe up a rocky trail in 35 degree weather while being swarmed by blackflies for two klicks?

Anyone who’s ever been canoeing will tell you that Portage is one of the most evil words in the English language.

  14. Pronto and anything involving GO (a great, existing name) both sound good to me
