How many times have you heard that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure? It’s a familiar saying, and for good reason: it’s true! Bring your unwanted and unused “stuff” to your local Community Environment Day, hosted by your city councillor, and transform your trash into treasure.

WHAT: “Building Toronto: Architects and Archives” Part 3 of Lecture Series
WHEN: April 5, 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm
WHERE: City of Toronto Archives (255 Spadina Rd.)

The City of Toronto Archives and The Friends of the Archives of Ontario present a series of lectures on architectural topics. The speakers will share their views on modern and historical building design, public spaces and the importance of preserving architectural records in archives.

The last lecture will feature Andrew Waldron. Mr Waldron is an architectural historian at Parks Canada, specialising in the history of Canadian modernism and its architectural manifestations, and current president of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada. Mr Waldron will talk about his experiences researching modern architecture.

WHAT: RE:ACTION An examination of gentrification.
WHEN: April 5, 7 pm – 10 pm
WHERE: Hang Man Gallery (756 Queen St. East)

RE:ACTION is a night of art, music and discussion surrounding the contentious issue of gentrification. RE:ACTION will feature works by local artists that exemplify the different aspects of gentrification. Guest speaker Adrian Blackwell will be discussing the topic of “urban change, gentrification and the arts in Toronto.” A performance by Andrew Austin will follow. Admission is $10 and will benefit SKETCH, a non-profit organization that provides art opportunities for street-involved and homeless youth.

WHAT: Finding Home Exhibition
WHEN: April 6, 2 pm – 6 pm
WHERE: Side Space Gallery (1080 St. Clair Ave. West)

Side Space Gallery will be opening artist Kathleen Vaughan’s “Finding Home” exhibition with a reception. Ms. Vaughn has developed mixed media works with about 100 Oakwood Collegiate students in grades 9, 11, and 12, on the theme of ‘home’, with specific reference to the neighbourhood around St. Clair & Oakwood. The work includes drawing, painting, photography, text and textiles.

WHAT: Toronto Walking Strategy, Open House
WHEN: April 7, 1 pm – 9 pm
WHERE: Sherway Gardens Mall (25 The West Mall)

The City of Toronto is in the process of developing a Walking Strategy, which will include visionary policy, infrastructure, and programming to create a rich culture of walking in Toronto. They want to hear your comments about how we can make our communities more walkable.

WHAT: Voices from the Past: Archives and Television
WHEN: April 10, 7 pm – 9 pm
WHERE: City of Toronto Archives (255 Spadina Rd.)

The City of Toronto Archives celebrates Archives Awareness Week with, Voices from the Past:
Archives and Television. Starowicz, creator and executive producer of the documentary series, Canada: A People’s History, will talk about how his work has been inspired and influence by archival research, including the challenges of translating archival records for the small screen. This event will be hosted by Michael Enright host of CBC Radio One’s, The Sunday Edition. Admission is free. Space is limited and tickets are required.

Fuse Magazine is proud to launch its most recent issue CREATIVE CITIES which takes creative cities rhetoric and deployment to task. Admission is $5 – $10 and includes a copy of the current issue.
