Montréal Monday: Illegal kitties, and Griffintown’s grounding

Each Monday, we bring you some of the popular posts from our sister blog, Spacing Montréal. We’ll keep an eye open for topics and discussions that are pertinent to current public space issues in Toronto.

• Any crazy old cat ladies who live in the Rosemont – La Petite Patrie area of Montréal may want to think about finding a new home for their little companions. The borough has passed a bylaw limiting the number of cats owned by each household to 3. This is an attempt to curb the number of stray cats in the area (feeding strays in this area is also subject to fines), but since the city’s SPCA is overcrowded with cats as is, one is left wondering where all these excess house cats would go?

• It looks like Griffontown won’t be taking flight next year as was planned. Due to the current global economic uncertainties, the redevelopment megaproject has been shelved by developer Devimco until the summer of 2010.

  1. Wouldn’t the logical solution to curbing the stray cat population be the exact opposite: allowing people to take the stray cats inside and keep them as pets?
