Canadian Urbanism Uncovered

  1. If crime is down, why can’t the police see fit to tackle Toronto’s graffiti pandemic?

  2. Glen: simple, cuz its not a pandemic and not worth cops spending their time on it. That’s a band-aid solution. Have cops spend more time in communities, in schools, youth leagues, etc and you’ll begin to address the problems. But graffiti is truly the least of our problems.

  3. Statistics may show that “reported” crime is down, but it doesn’t show whether many people are simply chosing not to report crime because they see the police as ineffectual. I don’t know whether that is the case, but I do know that that is what many people are suggesting. Personally, I think the police budget has increased far more aggressively than it needs to have over the past few years.

  4. I’m an artist and i “do” think it’s a crime to spraypaint on private property. Having said that, Matt’s right on the issue of dealing with the root of “hard” crimes. Graffiti should be the least of our worries.
