The jaywalking article from The Star talks about fines for jaywalking. However, your publication has previously said that jaywalking is perfectly legal: https://spacing.ca/toronto/2007/11/20/pedestrians-crossing-mid-block-in-toronto-the-definitive-guide/
“Go ahead, tell ‘em what you think of the TTC”
Can anyone register a domain name, put up a web site with off the shelf forum software and then get articles written about it in Spacing and The Toronto Star?
The printed version of todays Star includes the headline “Jaywalking City”, which in my opinion gives off a different tone than the online version.
People jaywalk everywhere in Canada and it usually isn’t an issue. Drivers elsewhere (especially out East) are FAR more courteous to pedestrians than here. I take serious issue with the contempt and reckless behavior drivers think they are entitled to in the GTA.
Here’s a link to national post’s story on the spate of pedestrian death’s
http://www.nationalpost.com/todays-paper/story.html?id=2488042
It features a comment by Jane Farrow, Executive Director of Jane’s walk, the pedestrian advocacy group, that certain arterial roads have semi highway-like conditions; the long distances between crossing points on these roads encourage driver risk-taking and pedestrian jaywalking.
Re: daycares – I guess the private daycares will be cheering the withdrawal of city spaces because they’re claiming all-day kindergarten will bankrupt them. Meanwhile Quebecers continue to enjoy $7/day daycare, the true cost of which is paid for with Ontario’s (Toronto’s) and Alberta’s (the oil sands’) equalization money.
