Constance Barnes is the Chair of the Vancouver Park Board. She was first elected in 2008 and is currently serving her second term in office, having topped the polls in both elections.
As Chair, Constance is extremely proud of the Park Board’s recent achievements including a smoking ban in all parks, beaches and playing fields, the opening of the first all accessible children’s playground in Kits Point and saving the beloved Bloedel Conservatory and her ongoing fight for Early Care & Learning. This is Constance’s fourth year sitting on the Joint Council on Childcare, first year as a Vancouver Public Library Trustee, and Transportation Committee member.
Constance comes from a very political background. She is the daughter of Emery Barnes, long time MLA of the riding and first black Speaker in Canada. Constance is a strong voice in continuing his legacy of a “tradition of change and community participation”. As a testament to her father’s work in the community, one of Vancouver’s most beautiful parks, located in Yaletown, is named after him and was recently expanded to include a children’s playground.
