The City of Vancouver has launched the first annual Awards of Excellence, a new awards program designed to recognize outstanding civic achievements in Vancouver made by individuals, organizations, and businesses whose efforts make Vancouver a better city.
“The Awards of Excellence celebrate achievements that benefit all of us by making Vancouver a healthier, happier, more prosperous, and harmonious city,” says Mayor Gregor Robertson. “Let’s do more to celebrate and recognize the great work that takes place in neighbourhoods across Vancouver. I encourage everyone to consider nominating an outstanding individual, local business, or organization.”
About the Awards of Excellence
The Awards of Excellence consolidate several City awards programs into one new program that will give more recognition to award winners, and bring a diverse group of leaders together to celebrate social accomplishments at a presentation ceremony. It also includes the creation of several new award categories not previously recognized by the City.
The Awards of Excellence include 21 awards in six categories:
- Accessible City
- Business Innovation
- Civic Volunteer
- Diversity and Inclusion
- Greenest City Leadership
- Healthy City for All
How City awards positively impact recipients
In addition to the pride of being selected, receiving a civic award has additional positive impacts for honourees.
“Winning a City award in 2013 has definitely had a positive impact on attracting volunteers and board members,” says Feri Dehdar, Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy Association of BC, recipient of the 2013 Access and Inclusion Award (renamed the Accessible City Award for 2014). “It’s encouraging to see excellent work be recognized.”
When the recipients will be celebrated
The first annual City of Vancouver Awards of Excellence will be presented by Mayor Robertson at a public ceremony in June.
