Vancouver, BC – October 10, 2011 – On October 11, 2012 CityStudio Vancouver will celebrate their second year and the launch of the fall semester by hosting AHA! Stories of Innovation and Action in Vancouver. This evening of inspired conversation and connection will feature “Aha! Moment” stories that sparked some of Vancouver’s most innovative leaders and game-changing projects.
Hosted at the Hive in Vancouver’s historic Gastown neighborhood, attendees will include students, faculty, city staff and CityStudio participants.
The diverse and interdisciplinary line-up of storytellers features:
- Salvador Ferreras: Acclaimed musician and Vice President of Vancouver Community College
- Mark Brand: Entrepreneur, restaurateur and advocate of food security in the DTES
- Ilana Labow: Fresh Roots co-founder and Urban Farmer
- Susan Grossman: Director of UBC Community Learning Initiative
- Kevin Millsip: Leader of social and environmental justice program Next Up
- Sean Pander: Acting Sustainability Director for the City of Vancouver
- Deanna Rogers: Founder of Change Lab/Zero Waste project
- Megan Sheldon: Community Arts Vancouver and Eco-Arts Salon board member
CityStudio Vancouver is a unique partnership between the City of Vancouver and six post-secondary schools; UBC, Simon Fraser University, Emily Carr University, BCIT, Langara and Vancouver Community College. CityStudio directly involves students in designing and implementing solutions for Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 goals. Over 500 students have participated in the first year at CityStudio and have completed projects on local food, green economy, community dialogue and more.
The primary focus of Aha! Stories of Innovation and Action in Vancouver is to celebrate the diverse talent, energy and creativity of the CityStudio students while supporting participants in making connections with community leaders to bring their projects to life and get them going on the ground. Rather than using a traditional workshop structure, CityStudio organizers are excited to utilize a storytelling format as a catalyst for discussion and exchange of ideas between students, storytellers and other participants.
“During the eight years that Dr. Janet Moore and I have been teaching together our students have been saying the same thing to us; they want to help the planet and they want to earn a living doing it,” says Duane Elverum, CityStudio Co-Director. “We believe that the Aha! storytellers will bring this possibility to life.”

CityStudio Vancouver is an energetic hub of learning and leadership where students design and implement Greenest City projects.
CityStudio is co-led by Duane Elverum (Emily Carr University of Art and Design) and Dr. Janet Moore (Simon Fraser University – Centre for Dialogue). The project is a collaboration of the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC), British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Langara College, Simon Fraser University (SFU), University of British Columbia (UBC) and Vancouver Community College (VCC). The project is supported by Vancouver’s Campus City Collaborative (C3).
