Revisiting Chinatown Revitalization

Join Henry Yu (UBC), Andy Yan (Bing Thom Architects) and Melissa Fong (University of Toronto, Centre A President), invited Chinatown stakeholders and politicians for a roundtable discussion and the premier of Joanna Yang’s short film on Chinatown Revitalization.
Chinatown—the community, its buildings, its urban plan—is one of the most significant cultural expressions in Vancouver. Crafted through over a century of contest, conflict and collaboration, Chinatown is as much the result of racism and tension as it is philanthropy and community spirit.
In 2002, The City of Vancouver took the initiative to bring together community stakeholders to devise a plan to revitalize the neighbourhood. The result was theVancouver’s Chinatown Revitalization Plan. It promised to support heritage, senior housing and business in the neighbourhood.
In 2010, the City of Vancouver began implementing an economic revitalization strategy aimed at attracting, retaining and growing businesses in Chinatown. The City is currently on its final phase of the plan.
In 2014, how is Chinatown changing and is it in the direction we had imagined? How is and how can the community participate in the final planned phase and what is the change the community wants to see for the future of Chinatown as we continue this century long process of crafting our community?
