Heritage Vancouver Top 10 Tour + Talk: False Creek South: Past, Present and Future

Meet at the north end of Spyglass Place at the ferry landing under the south end of the Cambie Street Bridge
Reflecting the 1970s values of a livable city and quality of life, the area was developed with a mix of one-third non-market rental housing, co-ops and condos in a Garden City landscape setting on leased, City-owned lands.
During Placemaking Week, join us in launching a new series of tours on the Top 10. The tour of False Creek South will explore the community vision, planning, urban design, development and current issues shaping the future of this historic area.
Led by Helen Cain, Past-President of Heritage BC, this tour will feature two guests:
Dr. Thomas Hutton, Professor and Associate Director, Centre for Human Settlements, School of Community and Regional Planning, University of British Columbia
Nathan Edelson, consultant to the False Creek South Community Association Re*Plan Committee, and retired Senior Planner for the Downtown Eastside, City of Vancouver
The tour will unfold as a discussion between Helen, Tom, Nathan and those taking part in the tour as they explore the 1970s political vision for False Creek South to create a socially diverse and inclusive neighbourhood on the former industrial lands, the City of Vancouver master plan and its implementation, and perspectives on the current issues of the renewal of leases, housing mix, increased density and infill design.

Heritage Vancouver Top10 Tour & Talk – Japantown, North Strathcona: Past, Present, and Future

Meet outside the Japanese Language School at 487 Alexander Street (Alexander and Jackson)
Join us for our second tour and talk in a new series on Heritage Vancouver’s Top10. The tour will explore the diversity of North Strathcona as “Vancouver’s first neighbourhood”, the pre-1942 vitality of Japantown, the post- internment community, and the current issues shaping the future of this historic area.
This tour features three guests:
Linda Reid, Reference Archivist, National Nikkei Museum and team member, Nikkei Stories Documentary Series, Orbit Films, and Landscapes of Injustice project, Simon Fraser University.
James Burton, Partner, Birmingwood & Wood Architects and Planners, and Denise Cook, Principal, Denise Cook Design, Consultants to the Japantown Historical & Cultural Review, City of Vancouver.
Helen Cain, Past-President of Heritage BC, leads the discussion with the guests and those on the tour as they explore Strathcona North as a place of arrival and diversity with the focus on the people and places in pre-1942 Japantown, internment, loss of property and community, and perspectives on the current issues of cultural continuity and the critical importance of the retention and rejuvenation of historic sites within Japantown and the North Strathcona neighbourhood.
