Release: Trout Lake Community Centre Official Opening, Saturday February 18th

Residents and media are invited to join Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Vancouver Park Board Chair Constance Barnes and Grandview Community Centre Association President Kate Perkins at the official opening of the $21.2 million Trout Lake Community Centre and an afternoon celebrating the history and future of the vibrant and diverse neighbourhood.

When: Saturday, February 18

Time: Official opening ceremony 11 am – noon; celebration of living community noon – 3 pm

Where: 3360 Victoria Drive (in John Hendry Park)

What: Remarks and ribbon cutting, cake, bbq, live music, theatre, storytelling, figure skating demos, historical multi-media display and more

The new light-filled complex with stunning views of John Hendry Park, Trout Lake and the North Shore Mountains boasts a community centre, preschool, state-of-the-art fitness centre and an NHL-sized ice rink (which opened two years ago as a 2010 Winter Games training venue for figure skating). It is jointly operated by the Vancouver Park Board and the Grandview Community Centre Association. Together, they offer more than 200 programs for all ages including art, dance, fitness, skating lessons, yoga, day camps, drop-in sports, indoor cycling, cooking classes, various martial arts and more. Along with a great selection of programs the community centre is also home to a full-size gym, performing arts studio, youth and seniors’ room, pottery studio, art studio, multipurpose rooms and a training room.

In keeping with the Park Board’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, this gleaming 34,000-square-foot facility is built to high environmental standards, targeting LEED Gold certification and includes many features designed to conserve energy and water. The building was designed by Walter Francl Architecture Inc. and built by Bird Construction.

The public is encouraged to bike, walk or take transit to the opening celebration. Limited parking is available.
