Eglinton
As the city awaits the opening of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, our cover section invites readers to travel along Eglinton from east to west, exploring different neighbourhoods and the changes that have happened and will happen along the route and even beyond it, reaching to each edge of the city. If Yonge Street is Toronto’s spine, then Eglinton could be considered its prime rib.
The decade and a half of Crosstown construction has been difficult for Eglinton. In exchange, it promises big changes, and not just in terms of faster (we hope) and more comfortable transit. It is supposed to generate new housing and economic activity – although the housing market slump leaves that in question. And new construction itself brings challenges, potentially displacing existing communities and services.
Meanwhile, our front section resolved into a few themes, with pairs of articles about cycling, engaging kids in city life, signs, and hidden gems. There are so many ways to explore the city, and fingers crossed that before this issue leaves the shelves, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT is one of them.
