  1. I like the part about asking for God’s blessing upon the clientele and thanking them after more than 25 years in business, on the other sign.

I never went to that shop very much; they didn’t have as many interesting products as Andes just south of Mont-Royal, not to mention the many, many Latino shops (some specialising in specific countries) closer to me in Villeray/Petite Patrie.

But I’m wondering if they were hit with a sudden rent increase…

I checked “liquidación” is proper Spanish in that sense: “Venta de las existencias de un comercio a un precio muy rebajado: La zapateria está de liquidación porque van a cerrar por obras”. It is not a “calque” from French or English.

  2. I too wonder if rents on St-Laurent north of Mt-Royal have gone up recently. It strikes me that a number of businesses this stretch have picked up and moved on in the last few years.

  3. Its no suprise that many stores are closing in and around downtown. The hike of parkmeter prices have pushed clientele outside of that zone and will continue to do so.

  4. Its an entire myth that businesses move because the price of parking goes up. Another dollar here or there does not have that kind of effect on business.

Rents and taxes are the thing that push businesses out. It is also a sign that maybe the business isn’t suited for its location anymore. Its sad to see this happen, but to balme it on parking costs is an easy target and almost never the reasoning.

  5. I don’t think the price of parking is an issue here in the Plateau, more than anything where this store was located. I live 5′ away from it and I believe the competition killed them. In this area people shop by foot mostly. I also don’t think there are many latinos around here as probably there used to be.
