Dare-Dare, the artist-run centre that made great use of its site in Mile End’s “Park With No Name,” has decamped for the west end of downtown, where it is now occupying Cabot Square. “Point de rencontre,” an artistic intervention that will take place until Friday, when it will culminate in a picnic and vernissage, is the perfect excuse to check out Dare-Dare’s new home.

DARE-DARE presents Point de rencontre (Meeting Place), a monumental participative work by Giorgia Volpe, taking place between August 1st and 15th 2008. The artistic intervention, which debuted this winter in Québec City, will continue at DARE-DARE in Montréal.

Meeting Place, inspired by the common braided rug will make use of salvaged materials, namely non-biodegradable plastic bags. Participants will weave a braid from these, which coiled will form a huge rug. Meeting Place is an invitation to experience the city in new ways and to redefine public places as grounds where we meet, exchange, and commit to common goals. The work’s title should be interpreted literally and metaphorically, the focus being as much on the process of gathering people together, as on the tangible results of their contributions.

Born in Sao Paulo in Brazil, Giorgia Volpe has been living and working in Québec since 1998. Her work has been featured in solo and collective exhibitions in Brazil, Canada, the United States, Mexico, and in Europe. Giorgia Volpe has staged numerous participative projects and public art interventions. In 2006, she served as curator for public art event, Habiter, presented by le Centre VU in Québec City and participated in the Les Convertibles event, produced by Les Journées de la culture.
