22 septembre : En ville sans ma voiture !

Whether it’s something to plan for or something to plan around, car-free day is returning for a 6th edition in Montreal, on Monday September 22nd. In the pamphlet that I got in my mail today along with the first federal election fliers, it said that car-free day is followed in 1500 other cities in the world.

Basically, Ste-Catherine Street between McGill College and St-Urbain, as well as cross-streets in between, will be closed to car circulation from 9:30 AM until 3:30 PM, with the segment between Place des Arts and Complexe Desjardins closed the entire day.

Car-free day in Montreal is an initiative of the Agence métropolitaine de transport, and they have a nice photo album of last year’s event.

  1. Of course it is too limited both in area and in time frame – note it starts and finishes after and before the rush hours – but it can raise public awareness of transport alternatives (public transport, cycling, making cities pedestrian-friendly – and carshares) and has the weight of an international initiative behind it. I’ll cycle to the city centre that day if I have time (never know ahead of time whether I’ll have too much work).

I really appreciate the “cycling chic” initiative with what appears to be a middle-aged cyclist in normal office attire on her pretty bicycle. This movement for cycling in normal attire, as is the norm in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, several German cities, Strasbourg … and now PARIS!!! semble avoir le vent dans les voiles. http://www.copenhagencyclechic.com http://www.amsterdamize.org

I do hope the tramline can be built along avenue du Parc – now that the échangeur has been demolished, this is feasable and would do a lot for the improvement of public transport (followed by other lines, of course).

  2. Sur ce plan, la rue St-Laurent ne s’étend pas au nord de maisonneuve. Étrange…

  3. J’ai du travail a faire jeudi matin au centre-ville.Vous ne pouvez pas faire ca le samedi?
