  2. Yep, the caption is embarrassingly inaccurate: it’s one of three buildings that comprise the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and the site has never had anything to do with the Royal Victoria College (historically it was adjacent to these buildings, but now it’s on University street).

That old house…it wouldn’t be in good company today, even though we all cry about losing the once idyllic Sherbrooke Street. To the new building’s credit, it’s much more interesting than the swimming pool that was there. The space requirements for the Schulich School next door (my alma mater) were beyond pressing, and this building was the best they could come up with after more than 10 years of planning and consultations.

The building has numerous uses for its footprint, and many features are state of the art. It includes:
    -a concert hall
-the entire administrative division of the Schulich School (as well as most of the staff offices)
-the Marvin Duchow Music Library (on three floors)
-the “Multi-Media Room,” among the best recording studios in the world (entirely underground and supported by vibration-damping springs)
-The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT)
    -an opera rehearsal studio
-and two reception lounges (or lecture halls)

This replaced a small, dirty, and poorly used swimming pool and a parking lot to the rear. Between the pool and the lot was small patch of grass occasionally used by the neighborhood’s dog owners. Most of the time it sat empty.
