Photo du jour: Magic grape vines?

While the leafy vines that carpet so many Montreal buildings in summer may still seem a lifetime away, mature stalks like these can be admired all year round. After climbing all over the building, this grapevine went horizontal and is now more than halfway to the other side.

  1. I’m actually surprised that Hydro-Québec doesn’t take these down. They usually prune trees like crazy to make sure falling branches don’t break power lines. I figure the added weight of the vines combined with some freezing rain is probably not ideal. But I for one think they should be left alone because it’s a beautiful sight all year round. At worst they should just reinforce the line with a steel wire if need be.

  2. Ha! Hydro-Québec made an utter mess of the trees all along my street, from Bellechasse to the Jean-Talon Market. Of course the trees have to be pruned, but the subcontractors just lopped off big limbs on the side closer to the lines, utterly unblancing the trees – a disaster not only in terms of aesthetics and envrionment, but even safety.
