You are walking down a Canadian city street.

A stranger approaches.

You,

a) Avert eye contact and feign ignorance of their presence.

b) Stare intently at the horizon until the apex of proximity to the stranger, at which point you glance nervously at them.

c) Perhaps mutter a curt “hi”, breaking into a painstaking smile.

d) Check them out shamelessly.

The stranger either,

a) Ignores you, too.

b) Glances at you, too.

c) Acknowledges you briefly.

d) Checks you out shamelessly.

e) Asks you for money/a phone number/directions/your dog’s name.

Everyone walks away.

 

You are walking down a New Orleans street, say, in the Marigny.

a) A man waves at you from his front porch.

b) A passerby asks how you’re doing.

c) A group of children are dancing in the music that spills out of their house, and their parents all look up, nod, and smile.

d) Some kids are having drinks and don’t mind if you join them, bum a cigarette, and play their instruments.

e) All of the above.
