Germany opens world’s first algae-powered building

This might just be the start of something new for sustainable energy.

In Hamburg, Germany, the design firm Arup has created the world’s first algae-powered building. The building features panels of glass bioreactors which contain microalgae. The algae generate heat and biomass while insulating the interior, and creating a noise-barrier.

129 bioreactors have been fitted on the building.
