Today is full of good little announcements. Both of Toronto’s weeklies have great things in them relating to Spacing and our extended family. First off, NOW named our good friends over at the Toronto Public Space Committee the “Activist Group of the Year” for all of their work defending our public spaces. Congrats, people! They also gave Spacing two secondary nods — In the Best Blog category, Torontoist.com took top honours, but our very own SpacingPhotos was a worthy runner-up. The Toronto Free Gallery took Best New Gallery honours, which mentioned that they work with interesting artists such as “the like-minded Spacing Magazine.” Also, our buddies over at the Toronto Environmental Alliance won best Environmental Group.

Over at Eye, they’ve decided to re-design the baby (it looks wonderful, BTW). Spacing associate editor, and [murmur] mastermind, Shawn Micallef has been introduced as a new columnist — Stroll will appear bi-weekly and feature different ruminations on parts of Toronto that are experienced on foot. His first piece is on the Don Valley Brickworks. And Todd Irvine, Spacing‘s Greenspace columnist, is featured in a profile. As the article states: “Trying to make trees sexy to the public is part of Irvine’s job…. His love of trees is infectious, and the urgency with which he talks about the need to maintain them goes far beyond typical tree-hugger rhetoric.”
