I was forwarded an interesting art exhibit called Safe Design sponsored by Safety Issues magazine that took place at the MoMA in New York last fall. A few items in the show were of particular interest: the security fence turned bench, the brass-knuckle (acutally stainless steel) rings for the ladies riding the subway late at night, and the whimsical metal chain links shaped as hearts. Here’s a link to the rest of the gallery.

  1. Aren’t brass knuckles, or stainless steel knuckles, stylishly illegal?

  2. Wow! I want those rings. They’d also make a lovely gift for any of my girlfriends. Nice stuff.

  3. I think they’d only become potentially illegal after you punched someone with them… but I’m not a lawyer…

  4. I think they’re illegal in many jurisdictions. Like nunchucks and throwing stars. Some karate kid in late gradeschool was always getting arrested for carring this stuff around.

But maybe the rings are more ring like than knuckle like, which one would have to prove in court i suppose.

  5. the brass knuckles like the lady is wearing are great for safety, but im also sure they are illegal. brass knuckles, like throwing stars & some butterfly knives (such as the ones with the wavy blades or blades that reach a certain length), are illegal as a concealed weapon. but people still carry them around regardless of what the law states. they must be illegal so that escaped or released convicts cannot keep them so easily & so as to prevent further crimes. however, i myself would carry a pair. they’re a great accessory to have in case of attack.

  6. Stop trying to make excuses-

Brass Knuckles are punishable by law and will be carried out that way. There’s no loop hole to get through. Having real brass knuckles is a Class A-C Weapon and if you say “I just wanted to look good” or “I wore the for safety” isn’t going to cut it.

  7. Knucks are not illegal in NC. You have to have them in plain view though. If they are in your pocket then they are considered a concealed weapon. Women, (and men) if carried in a purse is not considered concealed.

  8. what about knuckle knives like the 1918 Mcnary Knuckle Knife

  9. How can this girl get in trouble for wearing rings? In most states, brass knuckles are legal if kept in your home. Otherwise, just be careful, because you are not going to get away with just calling them “paper weights” or “belt buckles”, lol. Anyways, they work! One strike could end the fight! They are a good form of self-defense, originally developed from Japan, used in Okinawan martial arts.
