Spacing is pleased to announce the magazine is a finalist in tonight’s 32nd Annual Heritage Toronto Awards at the Carlu in the “Media” category. Thanks go out to those who nominated us.
As well, tonight Heritage Toronto’s “Special Achievement Award” will be given to the Zeidler Family for “promoting the conservation of Toronto’s heritage and their commitment to fostering community growth and the arts.” When I was a kid in Windsor, two of the most iconic places in Toronto that embodied the idea of “Toronto” to me were Ontario Place and the Eaton Centre, two Zeidler-dad buildings — and now, places like 401 Richmond and the Gladstone, Zeidler-daughter buildings, mean “Toronto” just as much.
Architect Bruce Kuwabara (National Ballet School, Gardiner Museum renewal) will deliver the William Kilbourn Memorial Lecture this year, discussing if Toronto’s cultural renascence is “just a blip on Toronto’s development radar screen” and how it can “act as a platform for the next evolution of the city: the creation of a true Public Realm for Toronto.” For the record, Spacing is officially in favour of the public realm.
