Canadian Urbanism Uncovered

  1. oh my it’s a new year and yet the same old spend athon is in full swing. What does the public have to do to make city council made accountable.
In any case I hope we aren’t paying for Joe Pantalones trip to Cuba, the land of the free LOLOLOL

In any case it will be a trying year for city council, the problem being they have now been energised into borrowing more and more and we will be paying interest on that borrowing for generations to come.I don’t think we should pay the councillors at all and just pay for their expenses.Maybe then they will work for the taxpayers of this city instead of en-slaveing them.

Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone,or at least get a second job to pay for the new taxes!

  2. Just read about the Internships at Spacing mag and that those positions are un-paid.Could somebody at Spacing explain how that works….

  3. Its an internship not a job. Its pretty straight forward.

  4. well I’m sorry but I don’t quite understand the internship concept, could you explain as if somebody has no knowledge. What are the duties of the intern? What is expected of them?

  5. wow, I haven’t read a sun article in a while… toxic stuff, really.

  6. George, you’re an idiot. Read the damn post on internships. It’s bloody fucking obvious. The job descriptions are there and way up front it says there’s no pay. What’s so hard about the concept of people working as a volunteer to get real world experience?

You really aren’t the brightest bulb in the box.

  7. From Oxford Dictionary:

    Internship: noun |ˈinˌtərn|

a student or trainee who works, sometimes without pay, at a trade or occupation in order to gain work experience.

  8. Was he asleep during the Clinton Era? Who doesn’t know what an intern is after 1998?

*Spacing Magazine interns enjoy a completely different and safe work experience than do White House interns.

  9. thanks everybody just want it made clear that there are people out there not in the union that actually work for FREE!Every union and NDP member I have talked too calls it slavery. At least the apprentices I have trained have been paid for every minute they were learning and working.Good for spacing to at least allow interns to do something in life instead of just hanging out on the street doing nothing.Keep up the good work!!!!

PS the food bank has hundreds of volunteers who work thankless hours to do what the city government can’t.

  10. By harbouring George Sawision our city is depriving a village somewhere of its idiot.

Even the towns of North Perth and Penetanguishene pay their city councillors. Anyone wanna live in more of a hole than those places?

But hey, George, if you don’t like democracy in Toronto, where more than the rich get to hold public office, then feel free to leave. In fact, even if you do like our democracy do us all a favour: make like a tree and fuck off.

Incidentally, you’re also wrong about the NDP AGAIN. Olivia Chow always had interns in her office, Giambrone does, Mihevc does…most of them do. What they don’t believe in is employing people (check Oxford, there’s a difference between being employed and interning) at wages that force them to use that food bank you love to talk about.

  11. Hey where is the love and tolerance?I guess I was always right that in Toronto we are becoming a one party town that doesn’t want any input at all.I love a democraric state and will always stay to fight for one to the end.And at the moment it seems you do have to be rich like Joe Pantalone or Olivia Chow,Jack Layton or even Rosario Marchese.I could never be able to earn such a high income for such low qualifications.I do care about the poor and think highly of anybody who does charitable work.

As for wages the NDP has done little to help the working poor except to trick them into garnering their vote.

Please keep the language a bit civil!

  12. Its okay for George to libel politicians but not okay for someone to say something negative about him. And somehow even your internship is somehow linked to the NDP.

Go to Rabble.ca and start arguing with the people you really have a problem with.

  13. rabble? I don’t have problems with the NDP, I just want the people who support them to be well informed!

  14. Its too bad most of your points about the NDP seem to be the least informed ones I’ve heard in ages. And everything you write is anti-NDP so I DO suspect you have a problem with them.

Again, if you want to “inform” NDPers go to the Rabble.ca site where a large number of Dippers hang out online and debate the merits of the party’s platform. I’d love to see how that turns out.

Luckily, Spacing has a wide and independent POV and our readers come from all political stripes. You’ll be eaten alive by the lefties on Rabble.

  15. George, If you can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen.

You think Olivia Chow and Joe Pantalone started out rich? Both of them immigrated to Canada with next to nothing, not even english. They embody the Canadian dream.

You want love and tolerance? Try starting with honesty and respect and you might get some in return.

  16. Joe has a salary that aproches $100,000 per year plus expense and a super pension package that is the envy of even union members. He has been at the public purse for a few years not including…..

Olivia Chow and Jack Layton combined make over $300,000 per year plus expenses which will eventually have a benefit and pension package that makes Joe Pantalone blush.

Nobody starts out rich that’s why we strive to be better, but the real “rich” are those that return to society especially the poor, support for artist, helping the working poor who will never see that kind of money. And let’s not forget how Jack Layton and Olivia Chow killed the national daycare program that I will admit I helped work on and pushed government action on for ten years. They didn’t show love or charity to single mothers or poor families.
I’m not here to love you just try to restore some respect to government and bring back control to the people something that the NDP talk about but never show in their actions.

Please don’t remind me of the Canadian Dream my own parents came here with just the shirts on their backs and a dream.Joe and Olivia were more privileged than you can imagine!

  17. PS Olivia Chow will make an interesting prime-minister!
I the exitement when Bob Rae was elected and Rosario Marchese was one of his ministers. That government was a real example of why the NDP can talk the talk but can’t walk the walk.I was told in no unsertain terms that the NDP are basically just an arm of the union to make sure that government unions are taken care off.Whether that is true or not can be debated but through all the elections that I have witnessed it doesn’t seem far from the truth and Bob Rae took care of his own.

But I may be wron but I thought that spacing was open to all opinions or is it just as I have suspected this is just open to NDP and that freedom of the press is restricted.

Please please prove me wrong…..freedom of the press is protected by the charter of rights which was brought in by………

  18. “But I may be wron but I thought that spacing was open to all opinions or is it just as I have suspected this is just open to NDP and that freedom of the press is restricted.

What the fuck are you talking about George?

  19. Do you ride the short bus to work, George?

It is common knowledge that the Liberals would have been delivered a vote of non-confidence by February of 2006 (the time that Paul Martin said that he would call an election) because Canadians thought that a party that had exhibited some of the most damning sorts of corruption did not have the moral authority to govern. The reality is that the Liberals put Canada in a position where the Conservatives began to look like a viable alternative, not the NDP. Did you want a corrupt party to continue governing without asking for a new mandate from the people of Canada?

All you have on Chow and Pantalone is lies, half-truths and innuendo. You prove it every time you post. Anyone who supports these two long-time public servants, you say, is somehow an NDP hack or corrupt (as you said the Zeidler, Sniderman and Mirvish families are in another thread), you’ve made up countless fairytales about what their life stories are and you’re incapable of truthfully stating their political record. You’re either the most self-serving wannabe politician in Toronto or you’re in severe need of professional help. It’s probably a bit of both.

  20. George, you are honestly the only commenter on this blog that has ever given us pause to reflect on our never-delete-a-comment(unless it’s racist or porn spam) comment policy. Even the occasional far right-and-left wing lunatic hasn’t made us pause the way you routinely do.

You are entertaining for a while, but why have you decided to use this place as your pulpit? You need to either preach to your converted, if you’ve got any, or as Matt suggested, take on the rabble at Rabble.ca. Those are the folks you seem to want to tangle with.

I suspect most of our readers see your name and skip to the next comment, as I have done for months now. From a purely practical point of view, nobody here seems to be listening to you. Use your energies more wisely.

  21. Shawn, is it true that if a student at the ontario college of art quotes Jane Jakobs in their presentation or essays they get a boost in their marks?
    rumour?????!?!!?!

A student their told me this when I was there visiting, I couldn’t stop laughing, must be an inside joke!Joey pants just grinned a little.

  22. Kerry Price/
you mean to tell me that like Jack Layton you prefer to have a minority government with Harper at the helm???When there was a coalition of the NDP and Liberal party we started getting real social reforms in this country. In fact Paul Martin was going to call the election in February, as soon as the time frame past to make sure the daycare program and other programs were beyond the point of no return.Jack knew that he called it too soon, the reasons are evident. He knew he risked the destruction of Daycare. And that isn’t my opinion, those in “the know” understand this as a part of history now.I look forward to hearing about the new deals being made at this very moment between the NDP and Conservatives.NDP are actually going to try to help the Conservatives gain a majority in hopes to stop the Green party from draining the NDP support.Very odd strategy for sure.

  23. definitely there’s an edge here, and yet where there’s smoke there’s some fire, or at least an adage goes.
Yet I’m not always a fan of the NDP myself for one very obvious reason – and I won’t have the eFfrontery to spell it out, as it’s a known beef, and the NeverDissP and the party loyalties have been part of the problem.
As for interns, I’ve been bugged for a time about the internships at NOW – not that I’ve done anything about it, and I do buy in by letter-writing and an occasional article which does have a reward of sort$ at times tho retail would pay more. But NOW is arguably making a LOT of money at times, we can’t see their books, and sure it’s a freebie for us, and they do pay a lot of staff but the unpaid internships there (and at eye too) are worth vexing about, and all this spacing.ca etc is a labour of love as far as I know – thanks.

  24. I would hope that if an OCAD student quotes “Jane Jakobs”, they’d lose points for spelling. And the original idea sounds like a pretty juvenile urban legend.
