Dept. of Funny Signs: Which Wood?

Which Wood?

Spotted on St. Clair Avenue West on a psychogeographic walk. The construction on the St. Clair streetcar right-of-way is progressing nicely, with nice new platform shelters with stops printed in large traditional TTC “subway” font. But here, at Wychwood Avenue, someone gave the stop the wrong name — Oakwood is one kilometre and four stops west.

UPDATE: Anthony Schein, an assistant to local councillor Joe Mihevc, kindly informed us that the sign is not really an error. After reading this post and seeing the sign himself, he contacted the project manager. The Oakwood sign was first to arrive, and is being used as a template for measurement and adjustment. Look for “Oakwood” to hit other local stops before making its way to its proper place.

  1. It’s a conspiracy so that locals can have the farmers’ market all to themselves. 😉

  2. For those who don’t live in “The Woods” it can be a little confusing. Wychwood, Humewood, Cherrywood, Maplewood, Valewood, Pinewood, Kenwood, etc….

  3. Good title, Sean.

Then again, we can’t blame the TTC, they’ve only had 4 years to build this 6 km long replacement streetcar line so they couldn’t possibly get it all right in such haste.

  4. Actually, it’s the City of Toronto who is managing the St. Clair ROW, not the TTC.

  5. “Oakwood is one kilometre and four stops west.”

Which brings to light another issue of the St. Clair ROW…four stops in 1km!

  6. It would probably take 1 year to correct the sign (lol)

  7. Why is this at all important when your city is covered with garbage?

call me a pragmatist, but theres no need to acclimate ourselves with the effete and ostentatious when basic hygienic concerns are unmet and a milquetoast of a mayor puts “temporarily out of order-please do not litter” signs on public trash bins.

  8. What other things have you decided to not concern yourself with — because they suddenly don’t matter — during the garbage strike? No telling of jokes, no shooting of breeze, no caring about the details. There is garbage piled up in a few places.

  9. isn’t imprecise signage incredibly irrelevant on a psychogeographic walk??

  10. If you don’t live your life normally day-to-day, you let the Garbage Strike win.

  11. It’s not a garbage strike, it is a city municipal strike! I can’t get to the islands in the summer something I long for in the winter!

  12. I was wondering about that mistake too. I feel better now!
