Instaflaneur: Toronto’s long bicycle history & the Royal Canadian Curling Club

Read more articles by

My Friday Toronto Star column visited the neat and tucked away Royal Canadian Curling Club at Broadview and Queen. With a long history in the area (from curling on the Don River) it’s also connected to Toronto’s equally long history of bike riding, and the Royal Canadian Bicycle Club. Pictures of the latter’s glory days at the turn of the 20th Century are all over the club’s front entrance. Proof that bikes have been here for a long time — longer than cars — and will be here for a while yet despite recent events. Maybe it’s time to revive the club. Look at those outfits — bet they were itchy.
