WHAT: Sustainability and its Discontents
WHEN: Thursday, October 17 | 6:30 – 8:00pm
WHERE: Isabel Bader Theatre, 93 Charles Street West
Part of the Daniels Fora series, this discussion and debate will examine some of the deep-seated conflicts that underlie the discourse surrounding sustainable urbanism. Featured speakers Robert Bruegmann and Vishaan Chakrabarti will present alternate perspectives on where the sustainable future may lie for North American cities.
Bruegmann is the author of the best-selling book Sprawl: A Compact History, which challenges the prevailing negative views surrounding suburban growth and argues that in planning the future of our cities, we must embrace the broad spectrum of suburban geographies that continue to be the mainstay of development today.
Chakrabarti is the author of the newly released book A Country of Cities: A Manifesto for Urban America, which argues that dense urban environments are key to overcoming challenges of environmental degradation, unsustainable consumption, economic stagnation, and decreased social mobility.
